The semiconductor industry globally prepares for the implementation and processing of silicium substrates with a diameter of 450 mm. In comparison with the 300 mm technical node which is current today, the processing of these substrates will double the number of components per substrate of consistent size. The changeover to the 450 mm node is intended to support the semiconductor industry in the continuing increase of its productivity.

A changeover of this kind cannot be realized without being thoroughly prepared and investing in the research and development of adapted manufacturing equipment, measuring devices and manufacturing methods.

Many European companies show a high level of competence in the development of material and devices for the semiconductor industry and, therefore, they are also partners of companies located outside Europe.

The goal of the European 450 mm initiative EEMI450 will be to offer companies and institutes a platform for cooperation with regard to the development of necessary skills. Based on this initiative common research projects are intended to be arranged and represented towards the European Union.

In addition to the development of the named skills, another goal will be to provide a basis for the investment of leading semiconductor manufacturers in new production capacities in Europe.
